2013 Small Grant Winners

The Montana Academy of Sciences is pleased to announce the winners of this year’s small grants:

Undergraduate students: Samantha Essig, UMW; Cary Phelan, Carroll College; Kayla Baisch, Rocky Mountain College; Kelly Christensen, MSU (Bozeman)

Graduate students: Russell Kaehler, UM and Heidi Clark, MSU.

Note: Ms. Phelan was a previous Junior Academy standout who as a high schooler was awarded travel to two national AAAS meetings.

The award winners are required to submit their findings at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the MAS. We look forward to seeing your work. The Board of the MAS expresses thanks to all those who submitted project proposals. Keep those great submissions coming next year!

2013 Junior Academy Award Winners

Delaney Thompson, Hellgate High School: Determination and Measurement of Allura Red Food Dye in Four Different Beverages

Mr. Isakson and Ms. Dickson will receive funding from the Montana Academy of Sciences to travel to the 2014 national meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Chicago. The MAS extends its congratulations to all winners, and thanks all 17 high school presenters who attended the MAS annual meeting for sharing their great work with us. Keep it coming!

Program schedule for MAS annual meeting

The schedule for this year’s Montana Academy of Sciences meeting is below.

In summary, Friday night will feature a reception, poster session, dinner, and award presentation. Saturday’s program will consist of oral presentations in addition to breakfast and lunch. If you are giving an oral presentation on Saturday, please note that you will be given fifteen minutes for both your talk and questions. Most presenters aim for twelve-minute talks to allow time for questions and turnover. Please observe these time limits; the moderator will enforce them strictly.

A pdf of the complete schedule with each presenter’s time slot and location is available for download.

Also, be aware that paper abstract books will not be available at the meeting. If you would like one, please download the pdf for oral presentations and/or for poster presentations.

For those visiting Montana Tech or the new University Relations Center (URC) for the first time, a campus map is available here.

Call For Papers: MAS Annual Meeting

The MAS announces its 2013 Annual Meeting, to be held at the Montana Tech campus in Butte Montana, April 12-13. For more details, see our Annual Meeting page.

There is online registration available, deadline March 1. **PLEASE NOTE, the deadline is much earlier this year.***

MAS Announces Small Grants

The MAS awards small grants to undergraduate and graduate researchers in Montana. This year’s deadline for grant submissions is February 15, 2013. Awards will be announced after the 2013 MAS Annual Meeting, April 12-13 in Butte. Awardees will be required to present their research at the 2014 MAS Annual Meeting.

Junior Academy Award Winners 2012

The Montana Jr. Academy of Sciences extends congratulations to these outstanding high school students, who received the following awards at the 2012 Annual Meeting:

The Gil and Marilyn Alexander Travel Award:
The Investigation of the Biological Properties on the Ayurvedic Plant Bacopa monnieri. Michelle Nemetchek, Big Sky High School, Missoula, MT

The James Cusker Travel Award:
The Utility of Ustilago bullata to Control Cheatgrass Invasions. Stacia Hill, Big Sky High School, Missoula, MT.

1st Honorable Mention:
Difference of Particulate Matter at Roundabouts and Stop-Controlled Intersections. Kyle Brester, Big Sky High School, Missoula, MT.

2nd Honorable Mention:
Wolbachia pipientis in Montana Spiders. Emily Sterbis, Big Sky High School, Missoula, MT.

The four students above are invited as Official Montana Delegates to the NJAS Annual Meeting in Boston, next February. The Honorable Mentions need to find funding, but will be given assistance by Big Sky Science Department. A Big Sky science teacher to be named next year will accompany the delegates.

Call for Papers – Junior Academy

Message from Carmen Hauck, representing the Junior Academy:

I am writing to announce this year’s call for papers for participation in the Annual Meeting of the Montana Academy of Science. It will be held April 13th and 14th 2012 on the campus of Montana Tech, UM-Butte. The annual banquet and poster session will be held on Friday evening. As the student presentations will take place on Saturday, attendance on Friday is optional. See the attached paper for more information about the program.

Students who would like to present a poster Friday night should indicate so when registering for the meeting.

Students who wish to be scheduled for a 10 minute presentation in the Junior Academy Sectional may submit an abstract to MAS by March 30. In addition, the author and title of these abstracts must be emailed to me (cchauck@mcps.k12.mt.us).

Please follow the instructions on the Call for Papers document (pdf).

Students who would like to enter the paper competition should submit their papers to me electronically no later than March 6, 2012 (deadline extended). The paper(s) should be of standard scientific format: Title page, abstract, acknowledgments, table of contents, introduction, methods, data/results, discussion, & references. A sample paper is available on the MAS website. All students who submit papers will be scheduled for a 10 minute talk. Students who submit the top papers will be scheduled to give longer presentations in the Senior Academy Sectional.
